FAQ

What makes SWISSDENT different from standard toothpastes?

In addition to gentle tooth cleaning with natural enzymes, the teeth are treated with a mild whitening agent with the help of the latest microtechnology.

What is whitening?

Whitening is the lightening of colour pigments (in the tooth) through the use of oxidising agent (peroxide or chlorine)..

How does the SWISSDENT whitening toothpastes work?

It is based on the SWISSDENT patented formula: micronised calcium peroxide particles penetrate between tooth enamel crystals where there are deposits of colour pigments. The chemical reaction breaks down the molecules in stains and makes them smaller and invisible to our eyes.

What is micro-technology?

It is the use of very small particles. The smaller an active ingredient is, the better it can reach the place where it needs to work. SWISSDENT GENTLE and EXTREME toothpastes use micronised calcium peroxide – an extremely effective whitening agent: Calcium ensures better adhesion to the tooth enamel. Micro particles have a small volume but a large sufrace area, which means they are much more effective. In addition, they are so small that they can easily penetrate between the hydroxyapatite crystals of tooth enamel.

What is biomimetic?

Biomimetic is the study of the structure and function of biological systems as models for the design and engineering of materials and similar to biologically inspired design.

What is the difference between EXTREME and GENTLE toothpaste?

EXTREME is particularly suitable in cases of severe tooth discoloration caused by tobacco, tea, coffee or red wine. GENTLE is suitable in cases of mild tooth discoloration and sensitive teeth.

Are there any side effects?

Allergies can occur in isolated cases – as with any other toothpaste. Therefore, if you suffer from allergies, you should check the ingredients carefully before use. For people with a fluoride allergy we recommend our CRYSTAL toothcream.

Can you use SWISSDENT if you have crowns or bridges?

Yes, you can use any toothpaste. SWISSDENT EXTREME can polish the porcelain or composite resin, but cannot change the basic color of the material. Ask your dentist if you are not satisfied with the color of the bridge or crown.

Does SWISSDENT attack alloys or inlays (gold/porcelain/composite resin)?

No, these are not affected by the use of SWISSDENT.

Can I use SWISSDENT toothpaste if I have sensitive teeth?

If the gums have receded, the tooth neck, which is made of dentine, is exposed. The dentine reacts sensitively to hot and cold, as well as to air and acids. Like any other whitening process, SWISSDENT can increase this sensitivity. The advantage of SWISSDENT is its very low concentration of whitening agent calcium peroxide (0.1 %), which means that the risk of sensitising the dentine is low. For exposed and sensitive dentine we strongly recomend CRYSTAL which covers the yellow and sensitive dentine with a white protective layer.

Can I use GENTLE or EXTREME if I already have white teeth?

Yes, you can. With its gentle polishing effect, it protects against new discoloration.

Are SWISSDENT toothpastes harmful to children?

Since there is a risk that children may swallow large quantities of toothpaste and thus take in too much fluoride, the same recommendation applies to SWISSDENT as to any other toothpaste: it should only be used by children over the age of 6. Children under that age should use specially formulated children’s toothpaste. Fluoride free CRYSTAL has no risk for children.

I have an implant Which toothpaste should I use?

According to recent studies we must recommend a toothpaste without fluoride because fluoride could cause corrosion of the implant alloy – titanium. Therefore we recommend SWISSDENT CRYSTAL.

For how long and how often can I use SWISSDENT toothpastes?

Just like any other toothpaste – every day. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for at least two minutes at a time, three times a day. We recommend not rinsing out. This prolongs the time of action.

How fast will I see results?

It depends on the type of staining, how deep the stain is in the tooth (extrinsic or instrinsic), your diet and brushing habits. If you have heavy discoloration we recommend enhancing the action of the toothpaste by using SWISSDENT EXTREME Mouthspray and SWISSDENT EXTREME Whitening Mouthwash.

Can I use SWISSDENT with an electric toothbrush?

Yes, we recommend a sonic wave toothbrush.

Are enzymes harmful to tooth enamel?

SWISSDENT is completely harmless to tooth enamel because natural enzymes areused for gentle tooth cleaning. With most toothpastes, coarse abrasive particles are used, which can damage the enamel.

What are the effects of the enzymes from pineapple (bromelain) and papaya (papain) which are contained in EXTREME and GENTLE?

They help to gently dissolve plaque, leaving the road clear for the whitening agent (CaO2), which can then reach the tooth surface between the enamel crystals.

What are the silicates contained in EXTREME and GENTLE and how do they work?

SWISSDENT microsilicates are natural minerals. They are used to polish the surface of the tooth.

What does coenzyme Q10 do?

It is an immune activator and protects the gums.

What is the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in EXTREME and what is it for?

It neutralises aggressive acids and gently polishes the surface of the tooth..

What effect does the Vitamin E in SWISSDENT have?

Vitamin E helps to keep the gums healthy by reducing free radicals which promote inflammation, and thus assists the healing mechanism.

What does the fluoride in SWISSDENT do?

Fluoride remineralises the tooth enamel and protects against caries.
